Iraqs Jewish Archive

This Nov. 15, 2009 photo shows an employee of the Iraq National Library inspecting the tractate from the Babylonian Talmud at the library in Baghdad, Iraq. Saad Eskander, the library's director, is leading efforts to return another, extensive collection of Jewish materials taken to the U.S. for preservation after U.S. troops found them in the basement of a secret police building. That the materials survived at all is remarkable considering that much of Iraq's cultural heritage was looted or destroyed as Saddam Hussein was toppled, including more than a quarter of the National Library's books and 60 percent of its collection of maps, photographs and records.
